Monkey Puzzle Tree - Araucaria Araucana
Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana
Golden
A vigorous evergreen coniferous tree with wonderful bright golden-yellow foliage that is maintained
throughout the year. Preferring to grow in moist but well-drained sandy loam soils, it can withstand chalk, but
really grows best in slightly acidic soil. Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Golden is grown as an eye-catching specimen,
taking advantage of it's excellent golden foliage. It also makes good hedging or screens and so is a good
wind-breaker. Requiring little maintenance, and maturing in 20 -25 years, it grows to a dense narrow conical shape
reaching 15m high and 4m wide.
Monkey Puzzle Tree - Araucaria Araucana
The common name of Chile Pine indicates this conifers origin and shape, having its native home with the Araucarian
Indians of Chile and Argentina. The more unusual, but frequently referred to name of Monkey Puzzle Tree relates to
its peculiar arrangement of sharp, closely-set leaves that cover its branches that would puzzle a monkey to climb
it.
Ideally, the Monkey Puzzle Tree - Araucaria Araucana prefers full sun and an acidic loam and
regular feeding. The tree grows quite large, slowly reaching 70-foot tall and so needs plenty of room to grow and
should not be grown near a house. After ten years it will be only 5-foot high which means you could have one
growing as a focal point in your garden for a good many years before it becomes a problem for you to manage. By its
nature, the lower branches fall with age, leaving the lower trunk exposed. If planted in shade, more branches will
drop early than if planted in full sun. That said, it remains a very interesting and quite attractive tree that's
becoming less easy to find these days. Being a conifer, it produces globular cones borne upright on top of the
thick triangular, sharp-pointed leaves that spiral around the stem of female trees branches and take two to three
years to ripen.
