List Of Evergreen Plants Found To Provide Suitable Hedging And Screening

Larger Varieties of Evergreen Hedging and Screening Plants:

·         Jersey Princess (Ilex Opaca) – Growing to about 30-feet / 9.14m tall and 10-feet / 3m wide, it can be grown in full sun or semi shade and likes moist but well-drained soil. It has a dislike for unprotected strong windy areas.

·         Oriental Spruce (Picea Orientalis) – Is the shortest form of any spruce and the male has dark red flowers which turn to yellow. It grows to 35-feet / 10.7m and 10-feet / 3m wide. It is known to be a handsome plant with deep green foliage and quite slow growing.

·         Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus ‘Fastigiata’) – Likes full sunlight and good well drained soil. Growing to 40-feet / 12.2m and 15-feet / 4.6m wide, it has blue-grey foliage.

·         Western Red Cedar, Giant Arborvitae - Thuja Plicata ‘Virescens’ - Enjoys full sun to light shade and not too fussy about soils, so anything average will do fine. It grows into a lovely tall pyramidal shape and had great glossy green foliage. It will grow to a height of 40-feet / 12.2m and 2.1m wide.

Smaller To Medium Varieties Of Evergreen Hedging And Screening Plants:

·         Fosters #2 Holly (Ilex Attenuatta) is considered to be the best and is female producing wonderful red berries. It will grow in full sun or light shade in moist but well drained soil. Growing to 25-feet / 7.6m tall it is compact at 5-feet / 1.5m wide and has dark green glossy foliage.

·         Spartan Juniper (Juniperus Chinensis ‘Spartan’) – A very popular upright juniper with medium to dark green foliage all year round and a very good choice for landscaping where it reveals its outstanding qualities. It likes full sun and a well drained soil and grows fast into a superb columnar shape, making it look very formal. It attains a height of 20-feet / 6m and 4-feet wide / 1.2m.

·         Emerald Sentinel Juniper (Juniperus Virginiana) likes well drained soil and full sun. It grows 20-feet high / 6m by 6-feet / 1.8m wide. The habit is columnar and foliage is dark green and maintains color well in winter. It also produces fruit as its female.

·         Southern Wax Myrtle (Myrica Cerifera) is considered to be an evergreen small tree or large shrub. Also known as Bayberry, Candleberry, and Bayberry Tree. It’s fast growing and will grow in full sun or partial shade. It will grow well in average soils and can be grown in lesser infertile soils. It grows between 10-feet to 15-feet / 3m to 4.6m tall and wide. It has fragrant leaves and the females produce small greyish berries. It is best suited to informal planting areas.

·         Picea Pungens ‘Fat Albert Blue Spruce’ is a small to medium sized tree of conical shape with leave of intense silver-blue. It likes full sun and well drained soils. It is has dense growth and is an upright pyramidal form up to 15-feet / 3.4m tall and 10-feet / 3m wide.

·         Flushing Anglojap Yew (Taxus x Media ‘Flushing’) Likes full sun to part shade with well drained soil. Described as being a narrow fastigiate form (Having erect and almost parallel branches tapering from the top). It has lovely dark green needles and is reckoned to be the best of its form. Its habit is a narrow column 10-feet / 3m high and 2-feet / 0.6m wide.

·         Thuja Occidentalis ‘ Smargagd’ – Emerald or Emerald Green (Eastern Arborvitae, Northern White cedar) Likes sun or part shade and average soil. Growing to 15-feet / 3.4m tall and 6-feet / 1.8m wide. They have pleasant bright-medium green dense foliage that is retains its color in winter.
