Planting Evergreens
Juniper Evergreens:
Pfizer Juniper:
The large family of Juniper Evergreen trees are frequently planted, with taller varieties like the upright Juniper
being used a contrast with a textured background. Planting evergreens from the spreading varieties such as the
Pfizer Juniper are traditionally grown for their ability to provide beautiful, but very practical groundcover and
edgings.
The very Flexible Evergreen
Yew:
Yew trees have upward reaching branches with thick glossy needles, and can be grown either as a shrub or tree
depending upon how their growth habit is managed from an early age. Usefully they grow well in strong sun and
shade, making them some of the most versatile and desirable evergreens available.
Planting Evergreens and
Drought: Evergreens, although considered tough can be adversely affected by continuous
hot, dry weather conditions and may show signs of stress with
their needles turning brown and dropping. Often evergreens suffering from drought shown very little
of their plight at first and by the time you notice and take action, it can be too late
to save them!
Watering Evergreen Trees During
Drought: Keep an eye on the weather and if in doubt, always water them very well. You
don’t need to water everyday unless the trees are young and not yet established. Mature and established trees would
appreciate water every ten to fourteen days.
Apply enough water to drench the ground deep enough for the roots to take up moisture, this maybe
anywhere from 6 inches or deeper. Consider applying mulch over the ground that will protect the area of root growth
from the heat of the sun and reduce water evaporation, so maintaining a healthy tree.
Also, be aware that large trees will pull as much moisture from the ground as possible and often to
the detriment of lesser species growing under or nearby to them.
Evergreens and Other Trees Will Damage
Property! Something also to consider are trees, not just when planting evergreens,
but any large tree or trees growing within close proximity of a property, and that is subsidence caused by tree
roots drawing moisture from the ground supporting the foundations. For example a house, as the tree takes up water,
the ground dries out and shrinks around the foundations, cracks and expands leading to instability of the house
foundations, causing walls to move, drop and crack!
