Growing Advice
Should you be fortunate to have a large garden or decent sized plot of
land that you want to develop into a showpiece, you really want to consider growing weeping evergreen trees.
They will provide outstanding structure and framework for many garden designs and in most cases provide
interest throughout the seasons, year-in, year-out. They will be mainly maintenance free, even if left to grow
naturally without staking. Choose the right variety and you get a change of leaf color as the seasons change.
Selecting the correct species will also give you magnificent flowers. Overall, there is very little to compare
with weeping evergreen trees.
Weeping Norway Spruce - Picea Abies Pendula
A dark green weeping evergreen tree for cooler climates, with exceptional weeping branches that shoot outwards
from inner stems that have their own drooping smaller branches. Growing to nearly, 15-feet tall, Weeping Norway
Spruce is best to let it lean naturally where it has a most attractive appearance.
Weeping Yaupon Holly - Ilex Vomitoria Pendula
Reaching a height of around 25-feet and 12-feet diameter, it is a beautiful evergreen tree with minuscule
elliptically formed leaves. This species of holly produces a tremendous display
of dazzling red berries throughout the winter. Weeping Yaupon Holly has a preference for full to partial
sun and is semi drought tolerant whilst reasonably flexible to dry or wet soil.
Weeping Bottlebrush - Callistemon Viminalis
Note this is a tropical evergreen tree and maybe unsuitable in some areas that are cold. Rising to nearly
25-feet tall, it has radiant red flowers at the ends of its branches that resemble bottle brushes. The Weeping
Bottlebrush likes full sun and requires proper pruning to maintain its pendulous silhouette.
Ollesons Green Weeping Rocky Mountain Juniper - Juniperus
Scopulorum Tolleson’s Green Weeping With exceptionally distinguishing characteristics
provided by long pendulous branches with sagging foliage, it stands out from the crowd of other trees making it
very individual weeping evergreen tree and the focus of attention. You must, however, provide enough growing
space as it can reach upwards of 30-feet high and 30-feet wide. This Weeping Rocky Mountain Juniper preference
is full sun with dry to well-drained soil.
Sargent’s Weeping Canadian Hemlock - Tsuga Canadensis
var.Sargentii
With magnificent weeping evergreen foliage all year round it grows nearly 10-feet high. Although a superb
evergreen tree, Sargent’s Weeping Canadian Hemlock has one potential problem is that it can grow 20 to 30 feet
wide left unrestrained, so pruning is consequently essential if you have limited growing space available.
Weeping Chinese Elm - Ulmus Parvifolia Sempervirens
A particular favorite for towns and built up areas especially where there are office buildings and parking lots
where its attractiveness makes effective landscaping. It has a fantastic outline and beautiful formation. Often
growing 30 to 40-feet high and grouped with evergreen trees, it has a tendency to shed its leaves in
colder areas. If in any doubt about planting the Weeping Chinese Elm, seek local expert advice.
